Man jumps from mall window during suspected theft attempt, dies

Vadodara, Feb 22: A 35-year-old man died after he allegedly jumped from a window of a shopping mall in Vadodara during a suspected theft attempt, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred around 6 pm on Saturday when the man, identified as Hitendrasinh Parmar, apparently jumped from the first floor of the Agora City Mall in the city’s Sama area, they said. Prima facie, the man was trying to escape after an attempt to steal at the mall, said inspector B B Kodiyatar from Sama police station. Though it was on the first floor of the shopping complex, the window is located much higher, equivalent to a four-storey building, he said. After falling from that height, Parmar died at the scene, police said. An accidental death report has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident, they said. (PTI)

Four school teachers held for ‘raping’ minor in Odisha

Kendrapara, Feb 22: Four teachers, including a woman, and a peon of the private school of a private school have been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, police said. The arrests were made on Saturday after the father of the Class-7 student and the district child welfare committee lodged separate complaints at the Rajkanika police station, alleging that the accused teachers had raped the minor, a senior officer said. The parents of the student approached the district child welfare committee after their daughter accused the teachers of abusing her sexually for a long period, he said. The committee initially investigated the allegation and brought the matter to police, the officer said. Odisha Police’s crime branch has classified the alleged gangrape as a ‘Red Flag’ case for fast-track investigation and close monitoring, an official said on Sunday. The ‘Red Flag’ category, introduced in 2014, applies to serious crimes against women, such as rape and murder, to ensure immediate attention and top-priority investigation. (PTI)

Two policemen found dead at border outpost in Gurdaspur

Chandigarh, Feb 22: Two personnel of Punjab Police, who were on duty near the Indo-Pak border, were found dead inside a police outpost with bullet injuries on Sunday, they said. According to the police, the deceased were identified as Gurnam Singh and Ashok Kumar, who were posted at an outpost in Adhian in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. While Kumar was a home guard, Gurnam was an Assistant Sub Inspector, Gurdaspur Station House Officer, Banarsi Dass said over the phone. The bodies were discovered inside the room, which serves as an outpost, he said. Another senior official from Gurdaspur district said the circumstances leading to the incident are under investigation. These outposts maintained by the Punjab Police in close coordination with the Border Security Force, act as the second line of defence, he said, adding that the area where the incident occurred lies about 2 km from the Indo-Pak border. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring urged both the state and central governments to investigate the incident. (PTI)
