NONGPOH, Feb 24: Fishermen at the Umran River on Tuesday recovered human skeletal remains that were found lodged between rocks, raising strong suspicion that they may belong to a man who went missing eight months ago after falling into the river from the Iewsier bridge.
According to sources, the fishermen from Umtasor village immediately informed the family members and local village leaders upon discovering the remains. The matter was subsequently reported to the police for necessary investigation and to ascertain whether the remains are indeed those of the man who had gone missing in July last year.
It may be recalled that (L) Ebi Nongshli of Umtasor village had reportedly fallen into the Umran river from the Iewsier bridge on the evening of July 27, 2025, while spending time with friends. He was swept away by the current and remained untraceable despite extensive search efforts carried out by family members and local residents. The wife of the deceased has expressed strong suspicion that the skeletal remains could be those of her husband, particularly after certain clothing items were reportedly found. However, the identity has not yet been conclusively established. The family has urged the police authorities to conduct a DNA test to determine the truth and confirm whether the remains are those of (L) Ebi Nongshli.
Meanwhile, police, in the presence of family members and local village leaders, have collected the skeletal remains for further examination and to carry out necessary legal formalities in accordance with the law.
