SHILLONG, Feb 24: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has lambasted the MDA government for allegedly weakening the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and cautioned that the state is not in safe hands under the present dispensation.
Condemning the present government for being insensitive to such an extent that it has reportedly driven the governance and administration of the autonomous district council (ADC) to a pathetic condition where the GHADC was unable to pay salaries for 44 months, Sangma said the administration cannot shrug off its responsibility and should have explored constitutional provisions to assist the council.
“I see a mala fide intention to weaken the ADC and it is proven beyond doubt that the state government has already weakened GHADC by infringing into the autonomy of the Council against the spirits and mandate of the constitution,” Sangma said.
Pointing out that their actions speak for themselves, he added that the ADCs are assets that belong to the people of the state.
Meanwhile, Sangma informed that the second list of TMC candidates for the GHADC polls would be released by the end of this week.
The party has already released a list of 14 candidates for the elections.
