NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram on Friday asserted that the Government has taken sufficient security measures and alerted all the states on the threat by some militant groups from North-east on the eve of the Independence day.

Replying to questions in a press conference here, Chidambaram said more than a dozen militant outfits mostly from the Northeastern region have given Independence Day boycott call this year like all preceding years. Only on Thursday, the Home Ministry had sent advisories to the state Governments to take adequate steps against such move, he said.

Chidambaram also said that the tripartite talks with UlFA militants will start very soon. “ A suspension of operation has to be signed with them after which the formal talks will start,” he said.

Altogether 12 different militant organisations of the Northeast, including the HNLC and Paresh Barua faction of Ulfa, have requested people of the region to boycott the Independence Day celebrations. The organisations include Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, Kangleipak Communist Party, National Liberation Front of Twipara, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive), Revolutionary People’s Front, Tripura People’s Democratic Front, Ulfa, United National Liberation Front and United People’s Party of Kangleipak.

Acting on intelligence inputs which suggested various militant groups may try to carry out terror attacks particularly in Northeastern States and Jammu and Kashmir, the Home Ministry asked the State governments to intensify vigil at sensitive locations and public places, the Union Minister said.

Chidambaram said this is a routine matter as the militants give such calls before Independence day every year.
