SHILLONG, Feb 27: The TMC Meghalaya has condemned BJP leader Sunil Deodhar over his contentious remarks on Christians, whilst describing the same as “an attempt to divide the state”.
TMC Meghalaya president and Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope said that such remarks were made to divide the people of the state belonging to different religious denominations.
Condemning the attempt, he added that people are free to practise any religion they like in a secular country.
When asked if the TMC is concerned about the increased activities of right-wing groups in the state, Pyngrope acknowledged that albeit there have been a few incidents, the same should not take place in Meghalaya.
“In Meghalaya, we have co-existed and respected all religions, and the tradition must continue without any party giving statements, which may hurt the equilibrium of the state,” he said.
Pyngrope further lamented that incidents of atrocities have occurred, and the practice of religion has been trampled upon on many occasions in several states across the country.
