SHILLONG, March 3: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday criticised the state government for its continued failure to address the plight of students appearing for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
KSU education secretary Pynkmenlang Sanmiet alleged that the repeated allotment of examination centres outside Meghalaya is no longer a mere administrative lapse but reflects a pattern of indifference toward the academic future of the state’s youth.
According to Sanmiet, thousands of students are compelled to travel outside the state annually because of the inadequate number of local centres. He noted that despite multiple appeals to the government, no effective corrective measures have been taken. “Year after year, we have raised this matter with the authorities. However, the government continues to ignore the genuine difficulties faced by our students,” Sanmiet said, adding that this inaction imposes unnecessary financial and emotional burdens on families.
The union further questioned the government’s priorities, suggesting that non-essential activities are being favoured over educational infrastructure. Sanmiet stated that since the introduction of CUET, the shortage of centres has been a persistent problem that the Education department has failed to resolve.
The KSU has urged the state government to immediately take up the matter with the concerned authorities to ensure adequate CUET centres are established within Meghalaya, allowing students to sit for the examination without leaving the state.
