SHILLONG, March 4: Three people were injured and a village headman was arrested following clashes between residents of Lakadong Ummat and Lama villages during a land survey for the proposed Green Field High Speed Corridor on Tuesday morning.
The violence broke out at Khlieh Wah Rkhiang during a joint measurement survey. Arguments over a land dispute regarding the corridor’s alignment escalated when several men produced daos and firearms were discharged.
Three individuals from Lama village sustained injuries after two persons allegedly opened fire. Police subsequently arrested Rimiki Amkhloo, the headman of Lakadong Ummat, in connection with the incident.
In response to the violence, the District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the disputed areas. The order bans the assembly of five or more persons and prohibits the carrying of weapons, including lathis, machetes, firearms, and explosive substances.
