NONGSTOIN: Langpih, the bone of contention between Assam and Meghalaya is yet to be provided with the basic amenities of electricity, roads and water supply by the Government of Meghalaya.

Ironically, despite the status quo agreement between the two Governments, the Assam Government have been bold enough to violate the agreement in providing basic amenities to its people.

However, the Meghalaya Government under the garb of maintaining the status quo has denied even the basic amenities to the residents of Langpih.

Last year, the Assam Government began erecting electric poles at Langpih which was a hotly debated topic in almost all the dailies of the State.

Strangely, the only silent figure was the Government of Meghalaya.

They neither stopped the Assam Government from erecting the poles nor copied the moves made by the Assam Government.

The Assam Government’s electric poles today stand tall in all the villages of Langpih area lighting the homes of the Assam residents.

The Assam Government also made a generous move by asking the Meghalaya residents to take electricity connection. But the suspicious villagers of the area, refrained from taking the electricity connection.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, L Lyndem, Executive Engineer (EE) MeECL, West Khasi Hills District informed “Electricity to Langpih and its adjoining villages are provisioned in the 12th Five Year Plan.

At the moment, the 11th Five Year Plan is still in effect and will conclude by the end of June.

But the works under the 11th Five Year Plan are yet to be accomplished and will take about six months post June to complete them.

Also, the DPR for the electricity connection of 11th Five year plan was sent to the centre in 2005 and was approved in 2009.”

He also feared that though the detailed project report had been approved, the sanction and implementation might again delay the prospect of Langpih receiving electricity just as the delay in approving the DPR of the project under the 11th Five Year Plan.

Villagers of Langpih are hopeful and hope that they like their counterparts would also enjoy light facilities in their houses.
