JOWAI, March 14: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Elaka Shilliang Myntang, detected several trucks transporting illegal coal from Laskeiñ-Barato toward Assam on Wednesday.
The organisation questioned how these trucks bypassed police outposts at Raliang and Barato villages in West Jaintia Hills despite High Court orders strictly prohibiting illegal coal mining and the government’s deployment of surveillance drones. The council also raised concerns regarding the source of the coal.
HYC president P Shylla stated that these trucks are also causing significant damage to a 16.20 km road recently constructed under the PMGSY scheme. While the road is designed for a 9-metric-ton limit, many trucks are reportedly carrying loads of 30 to 40 tonnes.
The organisation announced it will file a formal complaint with the PWD regarding the overloading and road damage. Additionally, the HYC plans to petition the Deputy Commissioner (DC) to address the unrestricted movement of illegal coal in the district.
