TURA, March 14: Social activist Greneth Sangma has filed a police complaint against former Phulbari MLA SG Esmatur Mominin at Baghmara PS for allegedly delivering inflammatory statements that fueled communal tension and violence.
This follows a similar FIR filed earlier by Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma against the former legislator.
The Garo Hills region has faced unprecedented violence, looting, and arson since March 9, after Mominin was manhandled while attempting to file his nomination for the now-postponed GHADC elections.
In the FIR, Sangma asserted that following the incident, the former MLA addressed a public gathering in the plains belt. “He portrayed the events in Tura with strong communal undertones, provoking hostility and mistrust between two communities. The speech was widely circulated, aggravating an already sensitive situation,” the complaint alleged.
Sangma noted that the resulting disturbances led to the loss of lives, damage to commercial establishments, and a serious disruption of public order. The gravity of the situation forced the district administration to impose a curfew and deploy security forces to restore normalcy.
The activist has sought a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against the former MLA.
