SHILLONG, March 14: Former Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has indicated her reluctance to contest the upcoming by-election to the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, she said the decision on the party’s candidate for the by-poll would ultimately be taken by the NPP leadership, which would also seek the consent of the person concerned before finalising the nomination.
“The party will decide on the candidate and will also seek the consent of the candidate. I prefer to be excused if given the option to choose, because I need to focus on my Assembly seat and ensure that my responsibilities there are not disturbed,” Lyngdoh, the NPP’s East Shillong representative, said.
She had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Shillong seat but was defeated.
She clarified that contesting the by-election was not about personal ambition but about commitment and responsibility. According to her, the question of desire does not arise, as the matter primarily concerns fulfilling responsibilities entrusted to her by the party and the electorate.
The East Shillong legislator further said that preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections in the state have already begun.
She, however, said the party leadership would take the final call on the candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat.
