Water-logged roads

Water-logged roads are a common scene in Shillong during the monsoon.
While the rainy season is still a few months away, the first spell of showers this year has already begun exposing the civic inadequacies of the Smart City.

Picture this classic scene—a convoy of vehicles, all lined up for an aquatic parade. Parts of the road outside the Shillong Civil Hospital have been submerged. While two-wheelers and cars can easily negotiate these water-logged roads, it’s the pedestrians who face the biggest problems.
Apart from getting shoes and socks drenched in drain water, pedestrians also risk being splashed with water from the tyres of a fast-moving vehicle.
Year after year, the drainage system promises to show up… right after a heavy shower, but remains elusive. Until then, Shillongites will have to pretend they’re amphibious.

A narrow passage leading to Gorkha Higher Secondary School in Upper Shillong has turned into a hazard after being dug up during the construction of the nearby four-lane road. Left
unrepaired, the damaged path has caused several schoolchildren to trip and fall, while authorities continue to turn a blind eye to the situation.
