TURA, March 15: Despite the situation in West Garo Hills remaining peaceful, Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal has extended the curfew by another day as a precautionary measure.
There was no report of any untoward incidents from any part of the district. On Sunday, curfew was relaxed for 12 hours on Sunday for church services, officials said.
“As a preventive measure and in order to restore complete peace and normalcy, the curfew has been further extended from 6 AM on March 16 up to 6 AM on March 17, unless withdrawn earlier. The curfew will be relaxed for 12 hours to facilitate normal activities,” stated the order by the DC.
During the relaxation period, all educational institutions, offices, banks, and other establishments will function normally.
However, authorities said Williamnagar Main Bazaar will remain closed during the relaxation period.
Personnel engaged in essential services such as police, ambulance, electricity and water supply, fire and emergency services, and on-duty government officials and media personnel will continue to remain exempted from the curfew restrictions, the officials said.
Meanwhile, as the situation in the district gradually returns to normal, the Peace Crusade led by church leaders continued for the fourth consecutive day, with a prayer service held at Chandmari Playground, Tura.
The district administration reiterated its gratitude to the local communities for their sustained efforts in preventing further violence and maintaining peace.
Security forces remain deployed at all strategic locations as the administration and police continue to closely monitor the situation across the district, the officials added.
