SHILLONG, March 16: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) on Monday staged protests at Motphran and Nongstoin market condemning the recent price hike and the shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in the state.
The protest at Motphran was led by MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla, who said the rising prices and irregular supply of LPG cylinders have caused severe difficulties for ordinary households as well as businesses such as restaurants and hotels.
Mahila Congress members raised slogans during the protest, urging the authorities to take urgent steps to address the issue and safeguard the interests of consumers across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Shylla said women, who are primarily responsible for managing household kitchens, are bearing the brunt of the crisis as they struggle to cope with the increasing cost and unavailability of cooking gas.
“Access to affordable cooking gas is a basic necessity for every household. The government must immediately intervene to control the rising price and ensure the regular supply of LPG cylinders so that the people do not continue to suffer,” Shylla said.
The MPMC president added that the shortage of LPG cylinders has disrupted daily life for many families, forcing some households and small businesses to seek alternative and often more expensive cooking arrangements.
The MPMC leaders also pointed out that the situation has particularly affected middle- and lower-income families, who depend heavily on subsidised cooking gas for their daily needs.
