TDP chief invites Telangana CM to his swearing-in ceremony

Hyderabad:  Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu rang up Telangana Rashtra Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), who took over as Telangana’s first Chief Minister on Monday and invited the latter to his swearing-in ceremony as Andhra Pradesh CM on June 8. Though KCR did not extend a similar courtesy to him, Chandrababu chose not be discourteous towards his erstwhile colleague, TDP sources said. “Besides congratulating KCR for taking over as Telangana CM, Chandrababu invited him to his oath-taking ceremony on June 8,” sources said. Chandrababu is scheduled to take oath at 7.27 PM on June 8 as Chief Minister of (new) residual Andhra Pradesh at Nagarjuna Nagar, between Vijayawada and Guntur. (PTI)

IAF chief meets PM

New Delhi: IAF chief Arup Raha on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is believed to have briefed him on the operational preparedness of the force. The IAF chief called on the Prime Minister and is believed to have given him an account of the preparedness of the force and its requirements in the future. The IAF is ready with a detailed presentation for the new Government on its requirements which include the earliest possible acquisition of 126 Rafale multi-role combat aircraft along with light utility choppers. The deal has been stuck for the last two years and in view of the delays in getting new planes, the IAF has been forced to continue operating its vintage MiG-series aircraft, which have been frequently meeting with accidents. The force is also facing shortage of light utility choppers in view of scrapped tenders and stuck deals in view of bribery allegations against the participating vendors and officers involved in the trial procedures. Raha has already briefed Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on the operational preparedness of the force and the support required by it from the Government for strengthening its capabilities. (PTI)

Wanted Naxal commander surrenders in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: A Naxal commander, carrying a reward of Rs 2.10 lakh on his head, on Monday surrendered in the Maoist-hit Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, police said. Maharu alias Gadwa Mandavi (30), an active member of military platoon no 25 of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) expressed his desire to join mainstream and surrendered before police, Kanker Superintendent of Police R N Dash told PTI. According to the Maoist cadre, he was frustrated with the high handedness of senior leaders from Andhra Pradesh who allegedly suppressed cadres from Chhattisgarh and exploited them. Maharu also alleged that senior CPI (Maoist) leaders were involved in extorting money from the locals and a handsome part of it went into the hand of cadres from AP, Dash said. Several other factors including the increasing pressure of security forces in the region mentioned by Maharu compelled him to quit the movement, the SP said. A native of Kalepar village in Kondagaon district, Maharu had joined the movement in 2004 and had been active in Rawghat, Partapur, Koyalibeda area of north Bastar region. An expert in laying ambushes in restive areas, Maharu had received special training in operating weapons, including rifles, making bombs and planting explosives, the SP said. Maharu was wanted in several deadly attacks on police personnel in Kanker region, he said. The cadre will be given assistance as per Rehabilitation Policy of Chhattisgarh government, the SP added. Man commits suicide in temple

Amethi: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in a temple here this morning, police said. Arvind Kumar, resident of Jamunipur village stabbed himself to death in front of a statue of a goddess in the Ahorwa Bhawani temple in the district, early morning, they said. Circle Officer of Tololi, M L Chowdhary said Kumar apparently had some marital issues and perhaps he decided to end his life because of those reasons. Kumar reached temple on his motorcycle and in a haste killed himself in front of the statue of the goddess, ASP Munna Lal said. Police reached the spot after some time and took the body in its possession. A case has been registered by the police in the district. The body will be sent for postmortem, police said. (PTI)
