GUWAHATI, March 23: Candidates from both ruling NDA and Opposition on Monday filed their nomination papers on the concluding day of filing nominations for the April 9 Assam Assembly elections.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on Tuesday, while the last date for withdrawal of candidatures has been scheduled on March 26.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma campaigned in support of AGP president Atul Bora, and AGP working president Keshab Mahanta, both of whom filed their nomination papers for Bokakhat and Kaliabor constituencies respectively.
Expressing confidence in his NDA partners, Sarma urged voters to support alliance candidates in the interest of development.
A massive public meeting was organised ahead of the nominations, followed by a large procession.
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi filed his nomination as the Indian National Congress candidate from the Jorhat Legislative Assembly constituency.
Accompanied by thousands of supporters, Gogoi led a grand rally to the office of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner to submit his nomination papers.
Before filing his nomination, Gogoi paid tribute at his residence in Jorhat to his father, former Assam chief minister late Tarun Gogoi, and his grandparents, and reaffirmed his commitment to follow their ideals, principles, and path of public service.
Meanwhile, candidates from various constituencies across the state submitted their nomination papers.
In Kamrup Metro district, several NDA candidates filed nominations from different constituencies. These include BJP candidates Vijay Gupta (Central Guwahati), Diplu Ranjan Sarma (New Guwahati), Pradyut Bordoloi (Dispur) and AGP candidate Tapan Das (Dimoria).
All candidates took out rallies from Khanapara along with party supporters before filing their nominations.
Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami (Dispur) and Opposition alliance candidate AJP’s Kunki Choudhury (Central Guwahati), also submitted their nomination papers today.
In Cachar district, candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, and All India Trinamool Congress filed nominations across seven Assembly constituencies.
Candidates submitted their nomination papers at the district offices in the presence of large numbers of party workers and supporters.
