SHILLONG, March 24: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jowai Circle, has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and contractor PBPL, demanding immediate repairs to a newly constructed highway that has deteriorated within two months of completion.
In a statement released Tuesday, the union expressed concern over the condition of the road, noting that massive potholes and crumbling asphalt have made the stretch dangerous for commuters.
The JSU stated that both the NHAI and the contractor must take full responsibility, bear the cost of repairs, and restore the highway to national standards within the 30-day deadline. The union warned that failure to comply would result in a “strong agitation” against the executing agency and concerned authorities.
Following the ultimatum, JSU leadership spoke with the NHAI Project Director, who reportedly assured them that repairs to the affected stretch would be treated as a top priority.
While acknowledging the official’s response, the union said it expects work to begin on the ground without delay and will monitor the situation to ensure accountability.
