SHILLONG, March 24: The East Jaintia Hills Police has safely recovered a woman from Wapung Chnong who went missing earlier this month, prompting the Jaintia National Council (JNC) to praise the rescue while highlighting the state’s growing job crisis.
The woman disappeared on March 15. Following an FIR lodged by the JNC on March 19, police traced her to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and brought her back home earlier this week.
The JNC praised the police for their prompt action and acknowledged the assistance provided by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla during the process.
However, JNC vice president Nangjan Dkhar stated that the case reflects a wider pattern of local youth being forced to migrate due to a lack of sustainable employment. He argued that the absence of effective job policies and reservation mechanisms compels young people to leave Meghalaya, often exposing them to risky situations.
The organisation urged youth to verify job offers before moving out of the state and advised parents to remain vigilant.
Reiterating its stand under the “Save Jaintia Mission,” the JNC called for the reservation of jobs in the private and industrial sectors for local residents, stating such measures are necessary to reduce migration and prevent similar incidents.
