GUWAHATI, March 26: The Assam government has requested diesel and petrol consumers in the state to refrain from panic buying, as it could trigger artificial and temporary shortages at certain outlets.

Assam chief secretary Ravi Kota, while taking to social media on Thursday said that there was no shortage of diesel and petrol in the market.

“This has also been clarified by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in a media interaction yesterday. In Assam, the situation is even more comfortable, as the combined production from all four refineries in the state (Numaligarh, Noonmati, Digboi and Bongaigaon) significantly exceeds local demand. There are no anticipated bottlenecks in the supply chain, including the movement of fuel from refineries to retail outlets,” the chief secretary said.

“Consumers are requested to refrain from panic buying, as it can create artificial and temporary shortages at certain outlets due to demand exceeding usual requirements, leading to a cascading effect on the supply chain,” he said.

“We request everyone’s cooperation in ensuring a smooth and stable fuel supply,” the chief secretary said.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma too allayed apprehensions of any fuel shortage amid the Wets Asia situation, urging consumers only to procure fuel which is necessary and not resort to any panic buying.

Fuel outlets in Assam’s capital city along with other parts of the state have of late witnessed long queues of vehicles with the demand for fuel on the rise.

In this regard, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has already clarified that there is no shortage of fuel in the district currently, amid widespread rumours that triggered panic buying.
