International comedy icon Russell Peters left Shillong in splits on Friday night, as a packed audience at Lariti erupted into waves of laughter during his live performance, organised by Rockski EMG. This event was a part of his Russell Peters Relax World Tour.
On stage, Peters drew laughter with his observations on cultural differences within India, particularly highlighting the distinct features of people from the North East, which he turned into light-hearted humour.
He also touched upon his personal experiences, global issues including US-Israel relations, and shared his view on India’s rise as a future superpower.
The night stood as a testament to Shillong’s growing reputation as a vibrant destination for international performances, with an audience that not only listens—but celebrates live entertainment with unmatched energy. He also picked on few audience and turned it into a laughter filled conversation.
Speaking to reporters after the show, Peters shared candid reflections on his experience in the hill city, blending humour with appreciation.
He joked that while many people approached him for photographs during his walk around town, a majority may not have actually known who he was.
He acknowledged being cautious with certain parts of his material, especially those involving religion, noting that such jokes are usually performed in North America or Europe.
Despite this, he said the Shillong audience responded warmly and the set “worked.”
The comedian also expressed his fondness for Shillong’s music culture, mentioning his desire to visit a local hotel known for hosting live music in its basement, adding that his love for rock music remains strong.
He noted, with a hint of regret, that he had missed a Def Leppard performance by just a day.
Describing the city as reminiscent of how he remembers India from his childhood, Peters said the atmosphere felt both nostalgic and refreshing.
He admitted that he did not know much about the region earlier but said the audience surpassed his expectations.
“What I heard about Shillong is that it is a great concert city, very enthusiastic crowd, and they don’t just come out to stare but come out to have a good time,” he said.
