Threat to journalist denounced

SHILLONG: The Shillong Press Club has denounced the arbitrary and inexcusable intimidation and threat to a comrade, Alva Sangma, Editor of Achik Songbad for allegedly misinterpreting facts while reporting an unfortunate incident that occurred in South Garo Hills on Tuesday which claimed the life of a young woman rendering her minor children motherless.

While condemning the gruesome act, the Shillong Press Club also stands by Alva Sangma and extends its solidarity in her discharge of her professional duties. “We shall not be cowed down by any elements be it government or otherwise as we strive to ensure that the citizens of the State receive their right to free and factual information which is our sworn duty,” the statement issued by Shillong Press Club added.

“The Shillong Press Club would also like to remind the organisation that in the light of its recent expression of eagerness to work towards peace in Garo Hills by entering into peace parleys, such unwarranted acts will in no way facilitate the said objective. The GNLA must therefore cease to threaten and intimidate journalists whose sole mandate is to deliver information to the people including that from such organizations,” the statement said.
