SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday granted bail to controversial CMJ University vice chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha even as the State CID department handed over the key of his residence in Crinoline, Shillong, to his wife.

Informing about the bail, Jha’s legal counsel SG Momin said that the bail was granted following a petition.

According to Momin, Jha was arrested on April 22 and was remanded in police custody for 10 days by the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on April 24.

Jha was admitted at Shillong Civil Hospital on the seventh day of the police custody as he was suffering from dysentery.

“The custody was supposed to end on May 3 but there were no further orders to extend the remand,” Momin said.

Notably, on May 15, the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate had directed that Jha should be produced before it as and when discharged from the hospital.

Jha is presently undergoing treatment at NEIGRIHMS.

Meanwhile, the State CID seized more than Rs. 11 lakh worth of Indian currency and US currency notes from Jha’s residence.

The CID sleuths also seized several incriminating documents relating to CMJ University and CMJ Foundation, the sponsoring body of the University.

Additional SP (CID) Spill Thamar informed that they seized around Rs. 10 lakh in Indian currency and 36 numbers of US 100 dollars bills and four 50 dollars bills from Jha’s residence.

Refusing to disclose the nature of the documents seized, Thamar said these would aid investigators in filing the chargesheet against Jha.

Furthermore, Thamar informed that the owner of the building cannot dispose the property, but can be utilized for residential purposes.

The building was handed over to Jha’s wife in the presence of lawyers and senior police officers.
