SHILLONG, March 29: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) state youth wing on Sunday supported the Seng Longkmie of Rngi Shillong in a surprise raid to clamp down on illegal activities at Lumshyllong.
The joint operation, which was conducted following complaints from residents, uncovered several gambling dens, illegal liquor vendors and large stockpiles of alcohol hidden in the forest.
The team also noted numerous vehicles parked along the roadside, causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters.
VPP state youth wing president Marbud Dkhar stated that the wing intervened after the Seng Longkmie faced harassment while carrying out similar drives earlier.
“We intervened to support the Seng Longkmie, who were often harassed and driven away. These activities pose a serious threat to the safety of the whole area and society,” Dkhar said.
During the raid, large quantities of illicit liquor were seized and destroyed. A major stockpile consisting of thousands of plastic containers was discovered in the forest, along with makeshift drinking spots and a vehicle allegedly linked to gambling activities. Several individuals fled into the forest as the team arrived.
Dkhar warned that such activities, particularly during weekends, negatively influence the youths and tarnish the image of Lumshyllong as a tourist destination. He urged those involved to stop immediately, warning of strict action if the illegalities continue.
Meanwhile, the VPP youth wing and the Seng Longkmie have resolved to continue periodic drives to ensure the area remains free from anti-social activities.
