BEIJING: Chinese state media say 81 people have been sentenced on terrorism and other charges in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

State broadcaster CCTV said the sentences – including nine death sentences – were issued in six different courts on Thursday. They were broken up into 23 separate cases and also included charges of murder and arson. The sentences come amid a massive crackdown in Xinjiang following a series of deadly attacks blamed on Muslim extremists. (Agencies)
