SHILLONG, April 1: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday called on the state’s youths to raise their aspirations and strive for excellence to buck a worrying trend—the failure of indigenous tribal students to crack the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination (CSE) since 2013.
Addressing students at an event in Shillong to recognise their hard work and dedication, he said the absence of successful candidates in the civil services for more than a decade should serve as a wake-up call. He urged students to dream big and work towards positions where they can bring pride to the state and contribute meaningfully to society.
Rymbui emphasised that the day belonged to the young achievers being acknowledged at the event. He said such initiatives are not merely the recognition of effort but also an investment by the government in the future of the youth.
Highlighting the growing role of technology, he described digital tools as an integral part of modern life and encouraged students to use them wisely as gateways to knowledge and self-empowerment. At the same time, he cautioned against distractions in the digital space, stressing the need for discernment in an age shaped by rapid technological change and artificial intelligence.
The minister also pointed to several student-focused initiatives of the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, including support schemes and investments in education. He noted that significant financial resources have been committed to empowering students, even as some may not meet eligibility criteria for certain benefits.
Underscoring the importance of skill development, Rymbui said the government has introduced subjects focused on community and practical skills from the elementary level to help students build competencies early in life. He observed that acquiring skills becomes more difficult at an advanced age, making early exposure crucial.
Encouraging students to recognise their individual talents and abilities, he said, each person possesses unique strengths that must be nurtured.
He called on them to use opportunities provided by the government, including access to digital devices, to enhance their knowledge and prepare for future challenges.
The minister concluded by urging students to stay focused, pursue education with determination, and aim to contribute not only to the state but also to the country and the world.
