Shillong, April 4: In a contest shaped by rain and decided by nerves, Friends United edged past Cricket Smit by one wicket to lift the 5th District League T20 Cricket Tournament 2026 title, organised by the East Khasi Hills Cricket Association.
The final, shortened to 18 overs a side due to persistent showers, saw Friends United opt to bowl after winning the toss — a decision that soon paid dividends.
Cricket Smit struggled to build momentum and were bowled out for a modest 72 in 16.1 overs. Nikodomas Lyngwa top-scored with 25 off 22 balls, but lacked support from the other end. Bryan Mc Millan Marbaniang delivered a match-defining spell, returning impressive figures of 4 for 9 in 3.1 overs.
Chasing 73 in tricky conditions, Friends United found the going far from easy.
Wickets fell at regular intervals, keeping Cricket Smit firmly in the contest. Precious Nongrud anchored the innings with a patient 25 off 39 deliveries, holding his nerve as the chase went down to the wire.Pynkhrawbok Thabah nearly turned the match on its head with a brilliant spell of 4 for 8 in four overs. However, Friends United managed to scrape through, reaching 75 for 9 in 17.5 overs to seal a dramatic one-wicket victory.
Nongrud was named Player of the Match for his crucial knock under pressure, while Marbaniang’s consistent performances throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
The final was graced by Meghalaya Cricket Association president James PK Sangma, alongside Rgh D. Kynta, Sirdar of Elaka Saitsohpen, Sohra Sports Association president Evan Maxwell Basaiawmoit, members of Seng Samla Saitsohpen, Synjuk Kynthei Saitsohpen, and officials of the District Cricket Association.
