BSF, BGB hold flag meeting in Dawki

SHILLONG: Following an incident on Friday when two Bangladeshi intruders were gunned down by residents of Hat Thymmai, a border area located along the East Khasi Hills stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) held a flag meeting in Dawki on Saturday
On Friday, estranged over cross-border encroachment into their orchards, resident of Hat Thymmai shot dead two Bangladeshi infiltrators from a group of 30-odd people who raided the orchards. The villagers, who were guarding the area, first warned the infiltrators but when they did not heed the warnings, the villagers opened fire with their licensed guns.
The bodies, which were immediately retrieved by the intruders before the BSF personnel could reach the spot, were rushed to the nearby hospital in Sylhet town in Bangladesh where they were declared dead, sources added.
During Saturday’s meeting BGB raised questions with BSF officials over the incident, who promptly denied their involvement in the incident.
It may be mentioned that BSF and the BGB had signed a recent agreement to restrain themselves from pulling the trigger on unarmed civilians on both sides of the international border.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that Friday’s incident was not the first instance of infiltration and raid on the orchards belonging to the residents of Hat Thymmai.
Incidentally, the incident occurred at the same place where Bangladeshi nationals attacked Khasi villagers on September 27, 2010 leading to the death of one woman and injury to two others.
