SHILLONG, April 7: Meghalaya observed World Health Day on Tuesday under the theme ‘Together for Health: Stand with Science’, focusing on equitable access, early screening, and strengthening last-mile service delivery.
At a programme held in the city, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah emphasised the importance of annual health check-ups and urged men to take an active role in family health. She also praised the dedication of ASHA workers in the state’s healthcare system.
Director of Health Services (MI) Dr JS Momin highlighted the state’s health infrastructure, which includes 489 sub-centres, 110 PHCs, 23 CHCs, and 11 district hospitals. She noted that screening is a vital tool for early treatment and that the state is working to address existing gaps in primary health services.
The Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim called for a shift in focus toward the quality of life, urging the public to prioritise early check-ups as a proactive health measure.
Medical experts also addressed specific health concerns. Dr Robert R Marak, District Nodal Officer, stressed the need for collective action against non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Dr Shailinia Syiem spoke on reproductive care, while Dr Anisha Mawlang and Dr Synrang Batngen Warjri highlighted the importance of early screening for cancer and heart disease, noting that even young adults should remain vigilant.
The NCD Cell of the East Khasi Hills DM&HO office conducted screenings for individuals aged 30 and above as part of the day’s activities.
The Department of Community Medicine at Shillong Medical College marked the day with a marathon and a field visit to Lum Sohriew village in Mawphlang block to sensitise residents to preventive healthcare.
Separately, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) held an interactive session on maternal health and nutrition at Lumdiengsai village. During the discussion, community members called for more frequent cleanliness drives beyond the annual state-mandated activities and expressed interest in dietary improvements to combat anaemia.
