SHILLONG, April 8: Ahead of the Assam assembly polls on Thursday, the Ri-Bhoi district administration has directed its counterparts in the neighbouring state not to set up polling stations in “areas of difference.”
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the administration has already held two rounds of meetings with Assam district officials to ensure peaceful voting along the interstate border.
“We have appointed nodal officers and border magistrates, and local officers-in-charge are working in close coordination,” the DC said. He added that while no trouble is expected during Thursday’s voting, the administration is prepared to respond swiftly to any incidents.
Ri-Bhoi shares borders with Assam’s West Karbi Anglong, Kamrup (Rural), and Kamrup (Metro) districts.
Addressing concerns regarding dual voters, the DC said such cases are unlikely due to the use of Photo Similar Entry (PSE) and Demography Similar Entry (DSE) systems, which flag duplicate entries in the electoral rolls.
Assam goes to the polls for 126 seats on Thursday following intense campaigning by major political parties, including the Congress and the BJP.
