USTM scientist contributes to landmark global study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases

Ri-Bhoi (Meghalaya), April 10: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya
(USTM) proudly announces a significant academic achievement by Dr. Yugal Kishore
Mohanta, Assistant Professor from the Department of Applied Biology and Global Burden of
Disease (GBD) Senior Collaborator, who has contributed to a major global research
publication in the prestigious The Lancet Infectious Diseases (Impact Factor: 31).

The research paper, titled “Global burden of lower respiratory infections and aetiologies,
1990–2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023,” represents
one of the most comprehensive global assessments of lower respiratory infections to date. according to a USTM Press release.

The study provides an extensive evaluation of the prevalence, causative factors, and long-
term trends of lower respiratory infections over a span of more than three decades, one of the
leading causes of mortality worldwide.

This landmark study was conducted by an international consortium of scientists under the
aegis of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, and
supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

It forms a crucial component of the globally acclaimed Global Burden of Disease Study framework, which informs health policy
and decision-making worldwide.

Dr Mohanta’s contribution to this high-impact collaborative research underscores his
expertise in the field of applied biology and global health. His involvement reflects USTM’s
growing footprint in internationally relevant scientific research and its commitment to
addressing critical global health challenges through evidence-based inquiry.

The University leadership lauded this achievement as a proud moment for the institution and
