GUWAHATI, April 10: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi expressed gratitude to the people of the state for their “overwhelming” support and said that a new government, as desired by the people, would be formed in the state.

“According to the people’s mandate, the Opposition alliance led by the Congress party will form the government following the results to be declared on May 4,” Gogoi said, while addressing a media conference at Rajiv Bhawan here on Friday.

Gogoi said unemployed youth are currently frustrated owing to the lack of employment opportunities. “The government’s failure has been clearly reflected during the elections. After unemployment, the government has also failed in the establishment of industries. From the tea industry to local enterprises, this government has not been able to create or promote any indigenous or local industries,” he alleged.

The Congress was able to take this lack of industrialisation to the people. “The government has failed in the field of human resource development and has not delivered in crucial sectors like education and healthcare. The rising prices of medicines and the poor condition of hospitals further reflect this failure,” the Congress leader alleged.

“The home department has failed to ensure the safety of women, and the core issues of rural people remain unchanged,” he added.

Gogoi claimed that the new generation was earlier unaware of past corruption allegations against the chief minister, but is now becoming informed.

“Congress has presented a new face and renewed energy by fielding fresh candidates, including many under the age of 40 and 13 women candidates. Though some leaders left the party, Congress has delivered a “new Congress” to the people, who have responded positively and extended their support,” he said.

He further highlighted that the party formed a strong alliance strategy by excluding AIUDF, and instead aligned with the Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal, CPI, CPI(ML) and APHLC, which has been appreciated by the people.

He reiterated that Congress has had no ties with AIUDF since the last Assembly elections, while alleging that the chief minister took support from AIUDF during the Rajya Sabha elections and even facilitated defections.

Gogoi emphasised that throughout the campaign, Congress maintained politeness and dignity while strongly putting forward its views.

“Even while criticising the government in manifestos and campaigns, the party never resorted to personal or indecent attacks. Congress maintained respectful relations even with opponents, upholding Assam’s traditions of civility and culture,” he said.

Gogoi said the Congress observed a strong anti-incumbency wave during the campaign and received widespread support across Assam.

He expressed gratitude to the people of Assam, party colleagues, and dedicated workers—from Rajiv Bhawan to booth-level workers—for their efforts.

Gogoi urged party workers to carefully monitor the EVMs and keep strict vigilance over strong rooms to safeguard the people’s mandate.
