Curtain comes down on city school’s sports meeting

SHILLONG, April 10: Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Friday reminded students that the state government now provides jobs to athletes who win medals in national and international events, as he urged them to pursue sports with dedication alongside their studies.
The sports minister was speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the Annual School Sports and Athletics Meet 2026 and Inter-School Athletics Meet organised by Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School.
Encouraging students to balance academics with extra-curricular activities, Shylla shared personal anecdotes to highlight how sports build discipline, confidence and teamwork. He stated that such participation is essential for the holistic development of a student’s personality.
In the Inter-School Athletics Meet, Nangkyrshanbor Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi of Gorkha Higher Secondary School was named the Best Male Athlete, while Marbudsaka Laloo of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School was adjudged the Best Female Athlete.
Similarly, Nepali Kanya Pathshala Secondary School won the march past, with Bhanu Bhakta Nepali Secondary School finishing as the runner-up.
Gorkha Higher Secondary School emerged as the overall champion of the meet.
The event, which showcased local talent and promoted healthy competition, was attended by the school management, faculty and students from various participating institutions.
