SHILLONG, April 11: Commuters in Rilbong and Oxford Hills can now bypass the chronic congestion at Rhino Point following the inauguration of a Rs 1.98 crore PWD link road, a project local MLA Sanbor Shullai claims has silenced skeptics who once dismissed the plan as a “political gimmick.”
The project, executed by the Public Works Department (Roads) under the SPA Scheme 2023-24, connects the main entrance of the Art and Culture complex at Rilbong to the stretch linking Rilbong Community Hall and the Umshyrpi Bridge road.
With the opening of this link, vehicles from Rilbong, Oxford Hills, and surrounding areas can connect directly to the MES road, providing a vital alternative to the frequent bottlenecks at Rhino Point.
Speaking at the inauguration on Saturday, Shullai noted that while some had questioned the project’s feasibility when the foundation stone was laid several years ago, its completion demonstrates a commitment to improving urban connectivity. He credited the cooperation of local stakeholders for overcoming hurdles to finish the work.
The inauguration was attended by Kench’s Trace, Oxford, and Rilbong (KOR) Rangbah Shnong Glanding Lyngdoh, Secretary Shnong Hamsaya Chen, and members of the respective Dorbar Shnong.
