SHILLONG, April 12: The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) has demanded a thorough inquiry into the AMPT road project after large portions of a newly constructed stretch washed away within weeks of completion.
Rajabala MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi, who inspected the site, reported that nearly 70 per cent of the stretch has eroded, with damage appearing just 15 days after work concluded. Terming it a “serious lapse,” Kazi said public funds had been wasted and called for accountability to be fixed. The MLA rejected the idea of simple repairs, arguing that patchwork cannot restore a road that failed so quickly. He instead demanded that the entire stretch be reconstructed.
Kazi called for a detailed investigation to determine whether the failure was due to negligence by officials, the contractor, or both. The affected area includes approximately 10 kilometres from Gumaijura to Rajabala, while the section from Gumaijura to Fulbari has also suffered erosion.
Urging the PWD Minister to institute a time-bound probe, Kazi said such rapid deterioration reflects systemic issues that must be addressed to prevent recurrence.
