FIFA World Cup 2026

New York, April 14: As the World Cup draw throws up intriguing contests across groups, familiarity, pressure and unfinished business have emerged as defining themes for several major contenders heading into the tournament.
For the United States, Group D presents a rare sense of déjà vu. Drawn alongside Australia, Paraguay and Turkey, the co-hosts have faced all three opponents in friendlies over the past year — losing narrowly to Turkey while edging past Australia and Paraguay. That familiarity, however, offers no guarantees.
The Americans, ranked 16th, will open their campaign against Australia before taking on Paraguay and Turkey in matches spread across Vancouver, Seattle, Santa Clara and Inglewood. While home advantage could prove decisive, concerns remain. The squad is grappling with its weakest goalkeeping pool in decades and limited defensive depth, with only Chris Richards featuring regularly in a top European league.
Much will depend on talisman Christian Pulisic, who has endured a prolonged scoring drought, while key figures like Tyler Adams and Sergino Dest are battling fitness issues. Under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, appointed after a disappointing Copa America exit, the U.S. will be desperate to progress beyond the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
Turkey, returning to the World Cup after a long absence, arrive with renewed belief under Vincenzo Montella, while Paraguay blend experience and youth in their first appearance since 2010. Australia, buoyed by an improved showing in 2022, remain a disciplined and dangerous unit.
In Group E, four-time champions Germany face a different kind of challenge — expectation. After back-to-back group-stage exits, the 2014 winners can ill afford another early stumble as they prepare to take on Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador. Julian Nagelsmann’s side boasts exciting talent in Florian Wirtz and towering striker Nick Woltemade, but defensive frailties and uncertainty in goal continue to raise questions.
Their opener against World Cup debutants Curacao, the smallest nation ever to qualify, is expected to be straightforward, but sterner tests lie ahead.
Ivory Coast return after a decade, riding the momentum of their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, while Ecuador, powered by Moises Caicedo and Enner Valencia, will be eyeing a historic run beyond the group stage.
Meanwhile, Group F offers a familiar narrative — can the Netherlands finally go all the way? The three-time runners-up, often hailed for their aesthetic brilliance, are once again tipped to progress, but face tricky opposition in Japan, Sweden and Tunisia.
Under Ronald Koeman, the Dutch will lean on Premier League stars like Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, though questions linger over whether this generation possesses the same cutting edge as its predecessors.
Japan, fresh from stunning upsets over Germany and Spain in 2022, could prove the group’s dark horse, while Sweden, despite a turbulent qualification campaign, boast firepower in Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.
Tunisia, still chasing a first-ever knockout berth, will look to build on their spirited performances in recent tournaments.
As the World Cup draws closer, the narratives are already taking shape — familiarity for the United States, redemption for Germany, and destiny calling once more for the Netherlands.
The stage is set, and the margins, as always, promise to be razor thin. (AP)
