SHILLONG, April 18: The Manipuri Elders’ Consortium Shillong (MECS) on Saturday held a silent protest in the state capital to condemn the killing of two children in the Tronglaobi incident in Manipur and criticised the national media for its perceived silence on the violence.
A large number of participants gathered for the sit-in here, carrying placards to honour the victims and express solidarity with their injured mother.
Speaking to media persons, the MECS president TS Leima slammed the national media for “limited” and “one-sided” reporting on the crisis.
She demanded immediate action against those responsible for the April 7 bomb attack in Moirang Tronglaobi village of Bishnupur district, which claimed the lives of the two children.
“The government should not wait for protests but must take action against those who committed this heinous crime,” she said.
On April 7, suspected militants allegedly hurled a bomb at a residence around 1 am in the Tronglaobi Awang Leikai area of Moirang, killing two minor siblings, a 5-year-old boy and his 5-month-old sister, while they were asleep.
Their mother was also left injured in the attack.
Recently, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had assured that those responsible for the killing of two children will be identified and dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
He had also directed officials to ensure the highest level of medical care and full support for the injured woman.
“This barbaric act is an assault on humanity and a deliberate attempt to disrupt Manipur’s hard-earned peace. I condemn it in the strongest terms. Let this be clear, those responsible will be identified and dealt with strictly as per law. Such acts of terror will not be tolerated,” Singh had said.
