GUWAHATI, April 27: A delegation from the executive committee of Gauhati Press Club met Assam chief secretary Ravi Kota at Janata Bhawan here on Monday, raising key issues, particularly the long-pending need for allotment of government land for a permanent office.

The delegation submitted a memorandum seeking government support for the construction of a dedicated building equipped with modern technical facilities, training infrastructure, health check-up provisions and recreational amenities.

A structured group health insurance scheme for journalists, in partnership with a PSU or the state, was also among the proposals.

Terming the discussion as constructive, the chief secretary appreciated Gauhati Press Club’s important role over five decades in strengthening the interface between administration and the people.

“Assured them that their concerns will be examined with due priority and processed as per established procedures. Also discussed the need to clearly define the scope of “press” in today’s expanding digital and media landscape,” Kota later took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to state.

The chief secretary further requested the Press Club’s inputs in shaping a more inclusive, forward-looking policy framework so that benefits reach all deserving media professionals.

“We agreed to work together in this direction- for a stronger media ecosystem and, ultimately, for the larger public good,” he stated.
