Spurt in chain snatching cases in city

SHILLONG: The cases of snatching of gold chains after throwing chilli powder on the eyes of victims, mostly women, are on the rise in the city.

On June 12, a woman identified as Sikon Kakoti lodged a complaint at Laban police station that an unidentified miscreant threw chilli powder in her eyes and snatched away her gold chain near Tender Care School, Bishnupur, Shillong at around 4.30 PM the same day .

Yet another case reported in Laban police station on June 8 said that while a woman was walking along with her six-year-old daughter near the Railway Guest House at Laban, a person snatched away her gold chain after throwing chilli powder on them.

Earlier on March 25, one S Marbaniang had lodged a complaint at Laitumkhrah police station that at around 6:30 AM, an unidentified miscreant caught hold of her, rubbed chilli powder on her face and snatched away her necklace at Dhankheti.

Police said that efforts are on to check the trend and urged women to be cautious while they move in and around vulnerable areas.
