Indian eves hockey goalkeepers attend special camp

BENGALURU, May 4: The Indian women’s hockey team custodians Savita, Bichu Devi Kharibam, Bansari Solanki and Madhuri Kindo attended a special goalkeeping camp conducted by Ireland’s David Williamson under the supervision of chief coach Sjoerd Marijne, that concluded on May 2 at the SAI centre here.Supported by Anandana, the Coca-Cola India Foundation, the 11-day camp ran from April 22, enabling focused and high-performance training for the goalkeepers.Williamson is a highly experienced field hockey coach and former player from Northern Ireland. He is a renowned goalkeeping specialist who has worked extensively with the US women’s national team.Senior goalkeepers Savita, Bichu Devi, Bansari, and Madhuri attended the sessions, allowing them to focus extensively on technical basics, decision-making, defensive organisation, and tactical awareness in match situations as the team prepares for major tournaments in the upcoming international calendar.Speaking on the benefits of such focused camps for goalkeepers, Savita said, “Being a goalkeeper, I’ve always experienced that these kinds of camps help you learn a lot, while polishing and improving your skills. We recreate match-like situations in training and have plenty of discussions. So, these specialised camps are always important.” Sharing her experience at the camp, Savita also shed light on how she embraced the role of mentoring younger goalkeepers. (PTI)

Pickleball: Arjun, Aditya win pro men’s doubles category

MUMBAI, May 4: Arjun Singh and Aditya Singh won the pro men’s doubles category while the pair of Mihika Yadav and Snehal Patil clinched victory in the pro women’s doubles category of the Maharashtra Pickleball Open here.More than 1,000 players participated in the tournament.The pair of Arjun and Aditya defeated Stavya Bhasin and Ammol in three sets in the pro men’s doubles final.Arjun and Naomi Amalsadiwala had earlier beaten Pearl Amalsadiwala and Stavya to win the pro mix doubles category.Aahana Punjabi and Atharva Khisti won the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively. Kiaan Shah finishes 2nd in star-studded Asia Series in Thailand

PATTAYA, May 4: Mumbai’s Kiaan Shah, representing Rayo Racing, produced his best result in international karting, with a second place finish in round 2 of the RMC Asia Trophy here.The 15-year-old clocked 51.218s on the 1.2 km Bira circuit, just 0.118 seconds behind Thailand’s Pannu Stienmonkong, who was the fastest in the qualifying.Kiaan started fourth in heat 2, but lost a place at the start. He soon overtook Japanese racer Shun Sekiguchi and Eason Tseng of Chinese Taipei. Next, he got past Stienmonkong and finished second behind Thailand’s Toby Gale.Disaster struck in heat 3, when Kiaan’s engine shut off while running third. A quick-thinking Kiaan found the problem and fixed back a wire. But still finished last.Kiaan started seventh in the super heat and drove a brilliant race to finish second. An accident caused a full course yellow, allowing paramedics to attend an injured racer. Rain and chaos ensued, once the race resumed, Kiaan fell to sixth spot after a mistake, but recovered to finish fourth.The result from all heats decided the starting for the final. Kiaan had a bad start from fifth and lost a place. He made an extremely daring move and moved to fourth on lap 1.Kiaan was unable to close the gap with the leader and eventually finished second, 3.8 seconds behind Gale, who won. Stienmonkong was third. The same grid contested the Thailand Championship and therefore Kiaan won two trophies, one for the Asian Championship and one for the Thai. (PTI)

Theegala shoots 64 to finish T-30th as Young wins by 6 shots

DORAL (USA), May 4: Indian American golfer Sahith Theegala produced one of his best rounds of 2026 as he carded a a bogey-free 8-under to finish Tied-30th at the Cadillac Championship.Theegala, who opened the week with a 69, had rough second and third rounds with 76-74, but closed with a solid 64 to move up 33 places.Also making a decent jump was Sudarshan Yellamaraju (68) as he finished at T-30 alongside Theegala. Akshay Bhatia, however, went over par with 1-over 73 and slipped to T-23, down from overnight T-8th.Cameron Young’s final round of 4-under 68 got him to 19-under for the week as he won the title. He finished six shots clear of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (68), who signed off as runner-up for the third time in succession.Theegala started from the tenth and had birdies on the 12th and the 16th to turn in 2-under. He was superb on the second nine with birdies on the first, second, fifth and then closed with three straight gains from the seventh to the ninth for a 64.Bhatia had an eagle two on Par-4 16th and four other birdies, but he gave away two double bogeys on the third and the 10th and back-to-back bogeys on the sixth, the seventh and the eighth.
