SHILLONG: The Opposition Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) has questioned the decision of the State Government to set up model schools only in the least developed blocks in Garo Hills and not in the Khasi- Jaintia Hills districts of the state.

“It’s really surprising that the Government has not considered the setting up of these model schools in Khasi-Jaintia Hills,” Nongthymmai UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh said during the Question Hour in the Assembly on Monday.

In reply, Deputy Chief Minister Professor RC Laloo said that these model schools were set up in Garo Hills as per the survey on women literacy conducted by the Union Government.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister had informed that the names of the ten least developed blocks in terms of literacy in the State are Selsella (55.37), Saipung (57.12), Laskein (57.40), Dadenggiri (57.71), Khliehriat (58.78), Songsak (62.50), Thadlaskein (64.45), Tikrikilla (62.40), Zikzak (67.14) and Dambo Rongjeng (68.45).
