SHILLONG, May 5: The Meghalaya government has approved the creation of land banks in East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills to facilitate future infrastructure projects.
MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said the decision was taken as land availability remains a major challenge for the government when planning to establish hospitals, schools, and universities. By creating these banks, the state aims to bring administration closer to the people.
The state government has opted for the direct purchase of land to save costs and time. In East Garo Hills, 93.5 acres at Rongalgre will be purchased for Rs 7 crore.
Shylla noted that acquiring this land through the standard acquisition process would have cost approximately Rs 10.35 crore.
Similarly, in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills, the government will directly purchase 26 acres at a cost of Rs 3.9 crore. The cost under formal land acquisition would have been Rs 5.7 crore. The move is expected to streamline the development of essential public facilities in the region.
