SHILLONG, May 6: Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) president Prof. D.R.L. Nonglait has formally accepted the NPP ticket offer for the upcoming by-election to the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
In a letter addressed to the NPP leadership on Wednesday, Nonglait, who is also a faculty member of North-Eastern Hill University, expressed gratitude to the party for reposing confidence in him.
“I express my sincere gratitude to the leadership and members of the NPP for reposing faith and confidence in me by offering me the opportunity to contest the MP by-election 2026, on the party ticket. After careful consideration, I am pleased to formally accept the proposal,” he stated.
He further said that he would wholeheartedly abide by the principles, vision and collective decisions of the party and work diligently for the welfare and development of the people, the state and the country.
Nonglait also said he looked forward to the guidance, support and cooperation of the party leadership, party workers and well-wishers in carrying forward the responsibility with dedication and sincerity.
Reacting to the development, NPP state working president Hamletson Dohling said the party had approached Nonglait with the offer to contest the by-election.
“We are happy with the positive response on his part,” Dohling said while welcoming the decision.
Earlier, a delegation led by Dohling, accompanied by presidents and secretaries of party units from seven districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills, met Nonglait at his residence in Lumshyiap Pdengshnong on May 1.
Dohling said the visit was made at the behest of the party’s top leadership, including Conrad K. Sangma, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, to formally request Nonglait to consider contesting the by-election on an NPP ticket.
According to Dohling, the decision to approach him was also influenced by strong recommendations from party leaders at the district level across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
