SHILLONG, May 11: Paiem Laborious Manik S Syiem, Advisor of the Synjuk Ki Lhlieh Nongsynshar Hima Sohra, has refuted claims by VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit that the ongoing movement in Hima Sohra is politically motivated.
In a statement issued Monday, Syiem clarified that the struggle is dedicated to protecting the traditional Dorbar system and preventing political interference in indigenous governance.
He identified the five pillars—Dorbar Kur, Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid, Dorbar Hima, and Dorbar Iing—as the essential foundation of the Khasi community.
Syiem explained that the May 7 protest by the Dorbar Khlih ki Nongsynshar Hima Sohra was a response to alleged “injustice” by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) regarding the election of the Syiem of Hima Sohra.
He noted that the delegation had approached the council seeking the immediate rectification of the process and the issuance of a confirmation certificate.
The Advisor criticised Basaiawmoit for portraying the issue as a political manoeuvre and branding the people of Hima Sohra as supporters of the National People’s Party (NPP). Syiem further denied any personal association with the NPP, maintaining that his stance is strictly in defence of Khasi customs.
“As custodians of our traditions, we are duty-bound to protect and pass on the customs, faith, and dignity of our people to future generations,” Syiem stated.
He urged the VPP chief to refrain from interfering in matters concerning the KHADC and traditional institutions, asserting that the dispute involves customary governance rather than party politics.
