WILLIAMNAGAR, May 15: East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner RP Marak has ordered an inquiry into a contractor constructing the Darugre-Chisobibra road following allegations of illegal stone extraction and severe environmental damage.
The probe follows complaints lodged by Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, who alleged that the firm engaged by NHIDCL deviated from the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR). Sangma claimed the contractor resorted to “pre-determined and intentional” illegal extraction of stones and boulders along the road alignment, in violation of the MMDR Act, 1957.
The Leader of Opposition also flagged the rampant dumping of debris and the use of overloaded trucks on the Songsak-Mendi road. He noted that these heavy vehicles are damaging a weak timber bridge that has a permissible load limit of only nine metric tonnes.
