SHILLONG: Despite the need for a full-fledged Commissioner of Divisions for Garo Hills in view of the current unrest in the region, an official posted in Shillong is given the additional charge of the post.
An official source said that there is a full-fledged office of the Commissioner of Divisions with adequate staff and other facilities in West Garo Hills. However, the Commissioner of Divisions for Garo Hills is still functioning from Shillong.
It is only when there is any inquiry to be instituted, the service of the Commissioner of Divisions is sought. At other times the official does not appear to seriously examine the various needs of the Divisions entrusted with him. In the past, several pressure groups from Garo Hills had urged the State government to provide special attention to the region in terms of reviving the office of Commissioner of Divisions and also for setting up of more government offices besides allotment of fund for development, but in vain.
