SHILLONG: With extortion and kidnappings becoming the order of the day, the legislators from Garo Hills are adopting the tactic of changing their cell phones numbers to avoid calls or messages of the militants and criminals.

A legislator from Garo Hills said that he and others had to change the numbers of their cell phones to evade calls as well as messages from various militant organizations demanding money.

To escape from the tracking of cell phones by police, militants do change cell phone numbers with a difference that they do not take SIM cards in their names.

Police in the past had tried to bust the SIM card rackets which had links with militant groups, but the move was successful only to a limited extent.
