SHILLONG, June 2: Residents of Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills heaved a sigh of relief after a meeting between the governments of Meghalaya and Assam at Lumpynthor, Lapangap, on Tuesday resulted in an understanding that will allow farmers from both sides to resume cultivation in the disputed border area.
The meeting was convened to ease tensions in the area and was attended by representatives of the two state governments, autonomous councils, district administrations, and village leaders.
In a statement, Waheh Shnong of Lapangap, Deimonmi Lyngdoh, thanked Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their efforts to foster peace and ensure a mutually acceptable solution.
“The people of Lapangap are relieved and happy that they will be able to return to their fields from tomorrow, June 3,” Lyngdoh said.
According to Lyngdoh, the discussions were cordial and conducted in a friendly atmosphere, with both sides demonstrating a commitment to maintaining peace and harmony along the interstate boundary.
