Dhaka, June 3: The brother of slain Bangladeshi youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi has accused members of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami and advisers of the former interim government of conspiring in his murder.
Hadi, a prominent figure in the 2024 student-led protests that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was shot during election campaigning in Dhaka on December 12 last year. He died six days later in a Singapore hospital. At the time, he was contesting parliamentary elections as an independent candidate after forming the Inqilab Mancha platform.
In two Facebook posts, Hadi’s elder brother, Omar Hadi, alleged that a private secretary to Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman helped create the circumstances leading to the killing. He further claimed that some advisers in the former interim administration and certain BNP lawmakers and ministers were directly involved.
Addressing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Omar called for all those responsible to be brought to justice and warned that the perpetrators could target others if left unpunished.
Bangladesh authorities earlier arrested two suspects in India’s West Bengal in connection with the murder. Hadi’s death sparked violent protests, attacks on media and cultural groups, and unrest across parts of Bangladesh, ultimately contributing to the resignation of a senior aide in the interim government.
