Separation of Judiciary from Executive

SHILLONG: With the completion of separation of the Judiciary from the Executive in six districts, the Meghalaya Government is on a fast track mode to complete the process in the remaining five districts.

On Friday, the Court of District and Session Judge, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in the presence of Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice P.C. Pant, and others.

This is the sixth district court in the State after the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive was effected in East Khasi Hills for the first time in 2011.

Besides Shillong, district courts have already been inaugurated in Jowai, Tura, Nongpoh and Nongstoin.

Shillong has the maximum number of cases followed by Tura and Jowai.

“The next in line is Baghmara followed by Ampati, Resubelpara, Khliehriat and Mawkyrwat in phases,” Law Secretary L.M. Sangma said on Saturday.

He said that the separation of the Judiciary and the Executive had already been effected in all the four civil sub divisions of Mairang, Sohra, Amlarem and Dadenggre.

According to the Law Secretary, several judicial officers have already been appointed for speedy delivery of justice after funds for the same were provided by the Government.

Within a few years, the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive will be completed in all the districts of the State, he added.
