SHILLONG: Rules are being framed for the formation of both the Meghalaya Lokayukta and the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission in the State.

An official with the Political Affairs Department on Saturday said that though the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act has been notified after the assent from the Governor a few months ago, framing of rules is necessary for the appointment of Chairman and four members of the Lokayukta.

As far as formation of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission is concerned, the State Government had already tabled the Bill related to the salary and other allowances of the Chairperson of the Commission, the official informed.

There are several cases of corruption and human rights violations in the State and in the absence of the Lokayukta to probe corruption cases at the official level and the Human Rights Commission to examine cases of excesses, several such cases are pending.

While cases relating to corruption are presently being handled by the State Vigilance Commission which has almost become a ‘toothless’ body, issues relating to human rights violations are being looked after by the magistrates by way of magisterial probes.
